Background of the Study
Phonetic variation in digital media reflects the evolving nature of spoken language in online contexts. This study examines how Nigerian users exhibit phonetic variation in audio content on TikTok and YouTube. TikTok, known for its short, creative videos, encourages users to experiment with pronunciation, intonation, and accent modification to align with trends and challenges (Adebayo, 2023). YouTube, by contrast, provides a platform for longer, more structured content where users may adopt more conventional phonetic patterns or, alternatively, engage in deliberate phonetic innovation. The differences between these platforms provide a rich context for understanding how digital affordances influence vocal expression and phonetic adaptation. Factors such as regional dialects, digital editing tools, and audience engagement contribute to the variability in speech sound production. This study aims to compare the phonetic features across these two platforms, documenting shifts in accent, intonation, and pronunciation. The research will shed light on how digital media platforms serve as laboratories for phonetic change and contribute to the broader sociolinguistic landscape in Nigeria (Oluwaseun, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although Nigerian digital media showcases significant phonetic variation, there is limited comparative research on how platforms like TikTok and YouTube influence these changes. The distinct content formats and user demographics on these platforms suggest that phonetic variation may manifest differently; however, current literature does not adequately address these differences. This gap limits our understanding of how digital media shapes vocal expression and the potential impact on traditional speech patterns. Addressing this issue is crucial for developing a comprehensive model of digital phonetic adaptation that takes into account platform-specific influences and sociolinguistic factors (Ibrahim, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To compare phonetic features in Nigerian TikTok and YouTube content.
To analyze the influence of platform design on vocal expression.
To assess the sociolinguistic implications of observed phonetic variations.
Research Questions
What phonetic variations are present on TikTok versus YouTube?
How do digital platform features influence speech sound production?
What are the sociolinguistic impacts of these phonetic changes?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of phonetic variation in Nigerian digital media, focusing on TikTok and YouTube. The findings will contribute to our understanding of how technology influences spoken language and help build theoretical models for digital phonetic change. The research has implications for sociolinguistics, media studies, and language education by highlighting the role of digital platforms in shaping vocal expression (Akinola, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
Limited to the topic only.
